Screening Caregivers for Elder Abuse
In addition to screening older adults, health and mental health providers may screen caregivers who may be at risk for becoming abusive or who may be abusing an older adult. The following screening tools are available for caregivers:
- Interview With Caregiver -- provides suggested screening questions
- Caregiver Self-Assessment Questionnaire -- available in English and Spanish. This questionnaire was developed by the American Medical Association in recognition that caregiving can lead to health risks, such as chronic stress, family conflicts, and failure to meet one's own personal and emotional needs. The questionnaire encourages caregivers to assess their own well-being to identify the need for a physical check-up, respite care, or support group.
- The Caregiver Questionnaire -- features questions to help caregivers determine whether they should consider professional help.
